Using the example of Drone Battery Overheating
to illustrate how a single technical data point navigates the entire architecture to drive business decisions while ensuring regulatory compliance.
1. Application Layer (IoT Sensor): A drone sensor detects a spike in battery temperature (An IoT thermal sensor reads 65°C, threshold is 60°C)
2. Information Flow (The Signal): Telemetry data is ingested via a Telemetry pipeline. This raw number is instantly tagged with a timestamp, GPS and drone ID, then pushed through a cloud-based Event Mesh.
3. Operational Intelligence (The Reflex): An AI model identifies a Thermal Runaway pattern as a Critical Overheat and issues an immediate override command. It immediately commands the drone to land at the nearest safe zone and triggers a Predictive Maintenance ticket for a human technician.
4. Digital Operating Model (The Engine): The DOM orchestrates the response. It reassigns the customer’s delivery to a secondary drone automatically. No human manager needs to manually re-route the fleet; the Operating Model is designed for this autonomy.
5. Automation Layer (Execution Arm): The drone’s flight controller executes an Autonomous Emergency Landing at a pre-mapped safety zone. This is where the Robotics/Drone hardware takes over. The flight controller executes a precision “Emergency Descent” manoeuvre autonomously. It doesn’t just “know” to land; it physically executes the physics of landing.
6. Business Architecture (The Strategy): The data reaches the top. The incident is logged against the Risk Management capability.
• ESG/EU ETS: The efficiency loss from the failed flight is calculated for carbon reporting.
• EU AI Act: The autonomous landing decision is logged in the “High-Risk AI” audit trail to prove the system acted safely and predictably.
7. The Innovation Layer (Evolution Loop): This is the post-game analysis. After 100 such landings, the Innovation team uses Machine Learning to realise that a specific battery brand fails in humid weather. They innovate the supply chain by selecting a new material, which is then updated in the Business Architecture (Supply Chain Strategy) as a new procurement standard.

When the Operational Intelligence system triggers an action (landing the drone), it doesn’t just fix the problem; it automatically populates the required regulatory Passports and Logs defined in our Business Architecture.

In a traditional model, a person would write a report. In the Digital Operating Model (DOM) the Information Flow Architecture treats compliance as a data output of the process itself.

This Zero-Touch Compliance is the ultimate goal of combining Business Architecture with Operational Intelligence outcomes. The Information Flow Architecture feeds real-time events (like our overheating battery) directly into the Digital Product Passport (DPP), while the DOM defines who owns the data and how teams react to it. To build a Zero-Touch Compliance model, the DPP must be a living data object.
The DPP Technical Data Schema – The Digital Twin
In a circular economy, the DPP follows the asset from Cradle to Cradle. When our drone’s battery overheats, the Operational Intelligence layer updates the schema automatically.
The Information Flow ensures the Current Health State is updated in milliseconds, so the Business Architecture (Sustainability & Risk) always has an accurate view of the fleet’s value.

To manage an autonomous, intelligence-driven system, the Digital Operating Model moves from traditional departments to Agile Product Pods. In the traditional operating model, you would need a drone department. The digital operating model is based on a cross-functional performance pods.
The Autonomous Operations Pod
This structure removes the manual report bottleneck, turning Compliance and Maintenance into high-speed digital functions. The team is responsible for the Operational Intelligence and Regulatory Readiness of the fleet:
• The Product Owner (Business Architecture): Ensures the drone operations align with customer KPIs and ESG targets.
• The Fleet Intelligence Lead (OI & Automation): Manages the AI models that decide when a drone should land or reroute.
• The Compliance Engineer (Regulatory Readiness): Monitors the Golden Thread to ensure the AI Act and DPP logs are audit-ready and legally sound.
• The IoT Systems Architect (Information Flow): Owns the Sensors-to-Cloud pipeline, ensuring the battery heat data never gets dropped.
